Elements of Art

Space (shoes): The area inside and outside art, or the piece of art with height, width, and depth
Contrast (books): The arrangement of opposite elements like light/dark and green/red
Emphasis (Bubbl'r can): The part of the art that catches the viewers attention
Movement (car): The appearance of motion in art
Pattern (blanket): An element that is repeated

These pictures/definitions are simple enough to help even young students understand the elements of art. Understanding the elements of art is important for students to understand to foster creativity within the students. These pictures show students that art is not just drawing and painting, but it is everywhere. 

Extension activity: Instead of having students just find pictures and write a small definition for this, students could also make a reflection paper, integrating language arts as well. They could answer questions like "how can I use these to represent ______" (whatever they are working on in language arts). Another extension activity could be a gallery walk, where students leave sticky note comments on each others pictures, talking about what they liked about their pictures.

Description: This introduction activity would be great to get to know students. First, the students should trace their foot (or feet if they need more space) onto a piece of construction paper. After this, they can add things to it that are important to them, or represent something about them in some way. The students' names should be included on it, and they should use at least three different types of media. I used construction paper, marker, pen, paper, cardboard, and stickers. Printmaking Inspired by Andy Warhol

We started by learning about the artist Andy Warhol. We then began to sketch some flowers, with a list of examples for ideas. After we got our flowers sketched, we taped the paper to foam squared and pushed our drawings into the paper with a pen/pencil so it would leave an indent in the foam. We used these foam squares like stamps, and rolled paint over them and pressed them into other squares of paper using different colors. We worked with a partner for this, so we only made two different flowers, but made two copies of them, and traded with our partner so we had two of our own, and two of another person's. We glued these to a bigger piece of paper.  Extension activity: Instead of gluing them to paper and only making four, students could create a classroom garden and create flowers in the beginning of the year with their names on them and facts about themselves in order to get to know each other.
